WHEN PUPPY GOES HOME

Pet proofing and safety article

First let me list a few Item you will need to purchase for your new baby,

  • Pee pads, blankets, doggy bed.
  • Crate, Cage, or playpen (strongly recommended I will explain below)
  • Harness and lead/leash I strongly do not EVER recommend collars for small dogs)
  • Toys with no loose parts eg; button type eyes or noses painted on or felt type eyes and noses are best. Also
stay away from toys with tiny squeakers in them. Your puppy can dislodge the tiny squeaker and choke on
it. There are toys with much larger squeakers in them
  • Food Royal Canin mini puppy 33
  • Food and water dishes
  • Bitter apple spray

Please purchase the above products before you pick up your puppy. Do not expose
your puppy to pet store
s until the have a least had their second shot. Your puppy will have had his or her first
shot before going home. This still offers only a marginal protection. The second shot increases their immunity
substantially

I recommend a cage, crate,or playpen
with a nice soft bed in it for your puppy. He/she may protest at first. But,
will soon develop an attachment to it as their very own personal safe place. This is more like to occur if, you keep
the cage near by and leave the door open throughout the day so he can go in out at his pleasure. Crate training
is
especially important if you are going to out, or inattentive for a long stretch of time even an hour. Puppies will get
into all kinds of trouble.
They put everything into their mouth much like a baby. They will chew on things and can
be seriously or fatally harmed. They sometimes chew on wires and cords this is where bitter apple very useful
.
Spray bitter apple heavily onto a cloth or paper towel and go up and down to coat wires and cords or anything
dangerous puppy may chew on
Cage/crate training is a very useful in pee pad or outdoor training. Puppies older than 14 or 16 week instinctively
will not go potty in their own cage. ABSOLUTELY DO NOT PUT YOUR PUPPY/DOG IN A CAGE WITH A COLLAR
ON
ALWAYS REMOVE IT FIRST!

The first night you puppy comes home may be a difficult one. Obviously he/she has just left his/her mom and
litter mates and the home he has been growing up in. I do not release my puppies until 10 weeks of age
minimum. They are
not socially developed enough before this age. In some cases the puppy will be even older
depending on size and development. Some puppies may be a little slower to mature than others. I do have an
eye for this and will inform you as to when the puppy is ready to go home.
Your puppy maybe very whinny for just a few hours upon coming home. He may be whinny for a few days. Most
likely that should settle down within 24 hours.
Puppies that are too young to leave (6,7,or 8 weeks old) tend to cry and cry for days and nights. Puppies this
young can get very sick and even die. Please, Please DO NOT purchase your puppy from a breeder that is willing
to let the puppy go home so young it is very cruel!!
If your puppy is whinny pick him or her up and cuddle with him or her as much as possible. Get down on the floor
and have a game of tug with puppy. Do not worry about training or correcting your puppy until you have
established a relationship with him/her. Usually this it will take a good 48 hours. Once you see your puppy has
affection for you he or she will naturally want to please you. This will make training go much more smoothly. In
the mean time during that initial 48 hours frequently put your puppy on pee pads or outside(warm weather only)
at least once every hour to help curb accidents.
If you are going to have your puppy spending his nights in his cage, do so right from the start. Do not remove him
from the cage if he or she is whining you have to ignore it as much as possible. If you puppy will be welcome in
your bed at night (as all mine are) Than that's up to you. Just be aware to get up once or twice a night to put
puppy on a pee pad. Once they reach 16 to 18 weeks they will not have to go during the night
